Description

The April 7th Sketch_Dailies was Mulan, and I've finally gotten around to giving her a try.  I took a few pictures along the way just for fun.  It's interesting looking at the progression as I think the image improves with each step.  Though I think the inks could use some work, they aren't balanced very well.  Or something, I can't quite put my finger on it but they should be better.

Looking at them I think I finally see why I always have trouble resuming a drawing done traditionally.  My pencil work for something I intend to use ink on is very loose.  Lots of construction and draw-through lines show up, I can make sense of the mess when I'm working on the project.  Once I step away for a while it becomes difficult to untangle.  Once I've put down the line work with a micron things are very clear and I can easily make sense of the drawing, except that with stuff in ink you can't really fix mistakes anymore.

I wonder if perhaps doing a little more erasing along the way to get rid of those extra lines, or maybe use a darker pencil to do the line work might be a better stopping point.  Then I'd have a better shot of being able to interpret what I was doing when I come back to the drawing.  I may need to experiment with this idea.

I made a mistake on one of her knees when doing the ink lines and tried to cover it up with whiteout.  This worked fine while the picture was black and white, but the prismacolor markers did not like that.  I did what I could to match the colors, but it's not very convincing.

I have to ask, not that I have a problem with traditional pencil and ink artwork, (I used to do it allot) but why not just scan the image in and vector over it? The result is a whole lot smoother and crisp lines and making a mistake isn't a death sentence... or do you perhaps like living on the edge? lol.

I like your style tho, just a suggestion, but I found when doing traditional artwork my lines always look all wobbly and crooked on some spots, I found a neat way around it is to just include folds and marks along the way on key areas (depending on the surface, cloth = folds and draping, metal = scratches and chunks for example) it distracts the eye and focuses it on elsewhere else.
